Silje with cabaret at Tjøme

Tjøme: A cabaret that will recreate the atmosphere from when the dance evenings at the many boarding houses were the Tjøme summer itself. That is what Silje Nergaard and others will perform at Gamle Ormelet in July.

While they are constantly, and apparently patiently, waiting for a confirmation from Bob Dylan, the Vestfold Festspillene (Vestfold Festival) are using the time to haul in goodies. One of them is that the versatile jazz singer Silje Nergaard will play cabaret at Gamle Ormelet on 9 and 10 July.

Text by Lunde

With her is Reidar Vinje Stensvold (vocals, guitar) who is responsible for the music, Olaf ''Knerten'' Kamfjord (vocals, bass) and Jon K. Rosslund (drums, percussion). The cabaret is called ''Det hender så mangt en sommernatt ...'' (So much is happening a Summer Night ... ) and is written by Stein Erik Lunde, well-known local lyricist behind previous successful productions at the Vestfold Festspillene. Like (for example) the Munch performance ''Livets Dans'' (The Dance of Life)  in Åsgårdstrand. Also that one with famous female singers in the lead role, Kari Bremnes for the first time in 1991, Karoline Krüger two years later.

Bushes and thickets

As the name suggests, it is the Hovedøen syndrome, immortalized by Kari Diesen, which is the theme of the cabaret at Gamle Ormelet. But the action, also the one in the bushes and thickets, is set in Tjøme at the time when the summer boarding houses had their heyday. It will be about summer holidays, about permanent residents and bathers, about falling in love and the love that often occurs when people meet at a summer dance to live and romantic music.

''The cabaret was written especially for Gamle Ormelet. The place has preserved a bit of that feeling, the atmosphere, as it was, in that they manage to arrange summer dances that people line up for, even though the music they dance to is completely different today,'' says marketing manager Kaare Weider at the Vestfold Festspillene. He believes the cabaret will be able to make a good impression on the summer island.

''They need more than beach balls and hot dogs out there,'' says Weider.

Space for Dylan

Bob Dylan's eventual confirmation that he will drop by Vestfold with his guitar and band in the summer seems to take some time. But according to marketing manager Kaare Weider, the Vestfold Festspillene can stand to wait a little longer, and space has been reserved in the program booklet for one of the greatest rock stars of all time.
